African Bank donates to Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf

The Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf (ESD) in Katlehong received 30 bunk beds and mattresses from African Bank on February 11.

An R1.1-million cheque was also donated to KwaPhenduka Projects by African Bank. The money will be split into different amounts to make sure African Bank’s initiatives are implemented this year.

Each of the 30 bunk beds donated has three beds, which makes the total 90 beds and 90 mattresses. This donation was made for the school’s dorm rooms, which will allow each child who uses the dorm rooms to sleep comfortably in their own beds.

According to Kennedy Dembetembe, national CSI manager for African Bank, they wanted to make sure all children from the school have their own beds.

“This is a proud moment for us since we have managed to do something good for the children of ESD. We are going to sleep comfortably, knowing we have done something good.

“The R1.1-m given to KwaPhenduka Projects will be used in three of African Bank’s initiatives – English Literacy and sport development programmes, both in KZN, and Gauteng Online Renewal programme, which includes ESD. African Bank launched Gauteng Online Renewal at the school a few years ago. Some of the money will be used to upgrade the school’s computer lab. The first lab that will be upgraded this year is this one at ESD,” said Dembetembe.

He added that since African Bank has had this good relationship with the school for a few years now, they will do anything in their power to make sure the school grows and the computer lab is functioning properly.

To make sure the good relationship between Mr. Price and the school is ongoing, Mr. Price in Sam Ntuli Mall donated clothes to the children.

Nathi Ntuli from Mr. Price in this mall said the partnership between Mr. Price and the school started in 2016 on Mandela Day when they brought food for the children.

“This time we looked at the stock we had and discovered that we had more stock then what was expected. So we decided to give to the needy children from the school, just to extend our good relationship with the school,” said Ntuli.

To show their appreciation, children from the school modeled the clothes donated to them by the store.

Four-month-old Masibambisane Foundation donated pillows and linen.

Manqoba Manana, one of the directors at the foundation, said their company is going to spend approximately R60 000 in the next four months at the school.

“So far we have managed to bring in pillows and sheets. The linen was supposed to be imported from China, but due to the coronavirus outbreak, our supplier delayed to ship in our stock. We were told to wait at least three months until the virus is under control,” said Manana.

He added that they are looking forward to having an ongoing relationship with the school.

Konki Maobelo, head of the department (HOD) of senior phase at the school, said the school appreciates the support from all three companies.

“On behalf of the school, I would like to thank African Bank, Mr. Price and Masibambisane Foundation for their kind gesture. We have had a situation where two children had to share one bed. Now each child will sleep comfortably in their own bed.

“As for the clothes donated by Mr. Price, I would like to thank them, it means a lot to our children.

“I would also like to thank Masibambisane Foundation for the pillows and linen,” said Maobelo.
