Bail application postponed for suspect in Gumbi murder case

The suspect’s bail application was postponed to February 27.

The formal bail application of the suspect in the murder case of Thabang “Ideology” Gumbi (36), who was stabbed to death on September 21, 2019, was postponed by the Palm Ridge District Criminal Court on February 3.

Gumbi, who was a former national organiser of Cosas and political commissar of the Young Communist League SA, was stabbed to death in Myezane Street, Thokoza.

The suspect handed himself over to the police the following weekend, on September 28, and was arrested and detained at the Thokoza SAPS cells, where he remains.

On February 3, Gumbi’s mother, Joyce Gumbi (58), told Kathorus MAIL that her son was stabbed while trying to separate two men who were fighting over R50, allegedly to purchase drugs.

“My son was taken to Phola Park Clinic, where he was declared dead on arrival,” said Joyce.

She said she won’t rest until she gets justice for her son.

“I was expecting a lot from him. Even today I still feel pain like it happened yesterday,” lamented Joyce.

Wandile Mofokeng, ANC Youth League convener for Ward 56 Branch, said Gumbi was nicknamed “Ideology” because he was very knowledgeable and passionate about teaching new politicians about communism.

“He was so knowledgeable that it is as if we lost the library of knowledge as well as our educator in the branch,” Mofokeng said.

About the postponement of the bail application, Mofokeng said they are not affected, so long as justice is served.

Kenny Ramabuya, the senior prosecutor on the case, said the family and friends of the victim need not worry about the postponement.

“There is no serious reason behind the postponement of the suspect’s bail application. It is just that there was not enough time to listen to the bail application since there were so many formal bail application cases on the day,” Ramabuya said.
