Speeding lands 7 in jail

Between the weekend of January 25 and 26, seven motorists were arrested after they were caught exceeding the speed limit in Alberton and Primrose.

According to a media statement released by the EMPD, the Metro police’s Speed Law Enforcement Unit arrested seven drivers for non-compliance with regulated speed limits.

• On Saturday between 5am and 8am in Brackendowns, on the Kliprivier Road between Vaal and Andries streets, two motorists were arrested for clocking speeds of 117 and 123km/h on an 80km/h zone.

• At 5.55am, a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi from Johannesburg to Katlehong with thirteen occupants, was stopped, and a 29-year old male driver was arrested for clocking 123km/h in an 80km/h area. The driver, according to the statement, said he exceeded the speed because “it was a rush hour”.

•A 37-year old male driver of a VW Polo, was nabbed for exceeding a speed limit, driving at 117km/h in an 80km/h, claiming he was late for work. Both drivers were locked up at the Brackendowns police station.

• On January 26, between 6am and 11am, on the AG De Witt Drive, Primrose, between the Main and Northreef, five drivers were apprehended and taken to Primrose police station, for clocking 98 and 105km/h, on a 60km/h zone.

• A 19-year-old male driver in a BMW sedan, was arrested at 9.30am when he clocked 105km/h in an 80km/hzone. He claimed he was late for church. At 9am on the same stretch of the roadway, a 23 year-old male driver in a VW Golf, registered 102km/h in an 80km/h zone citing he was rushing home. Other three drivers were arrested for registering speeds of 98km/h in an 80km/h zone

All the seven arrested drivers face charges of reckless and negligent driving. They are expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court and Germiston Magistrate’s Courts.
