Thokoza SAPS’s new head of Vispol shares his strategies

He shared his strategies for fighting crime in the community.

Following the departure of Thokoza SAPS’s head of Visible Policing, Lt Col Magezi Chawuke, who retired from the police force, Thokoza Police Station has welcomed the man who will be filling his shoes.

From being operational commander at the station, Capt Bongani Dube has been appointed as acting head of Vispol.

Born in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, Dube came to Johannesburg in 1990 to look for work.

“In 1994 the opportunity of joining the force came up and I grabbed it with both hands,” he said.

“I found myself attending the first police training at Maleoskop Police Training College in Mpumalanga, followed by the second training that I attended at Hamanskraal Police Training College.”

Other top positions he occupied in his career as a police officer included that of inspector at Brakpan Police detectives in 2005, where he served until the beginning of 2009. He was promoted to warrant officer that same year at Thokoza SAPS.

“As head of Visible Policing I will deal with murderers. I will do that through community mobilisation at the hostels, where most of the crimes take place. I will also revive all the structures, including the CPF, patrollers and izinduna from different hostels,” said Dube.

He said he would like to see all the structures working hand in hand with the police in combating crime.

He urged the community to play their part.

“I would like them to inform me if there are any criminal elements they are aware of,” Dube said.

He also plans to fight domestic violence.

“I am planning to conduct a house-to-house awareness campaign whereby my team and I will be addressing men, as they are mostly the perpetrators of these crimes,” he said.

Dube also has a mechanism in place to ensure that case dockets don’t go missing.

“All dockets are going to be scanned so that it will be easy to retrieve them if they are lost or stolen. If the dockets are missing and the police officers are defeating the ends of justice, drastic measures are going to be taken against those police officials,” he warned.
