Five nabbed for possession of unlicensed firearm in Zonkizizwe

Police arrest suspects for various crimes.

As the fight against crime intensifies, police in the Ekurhuleni District left no stone unturned when 78 suspects were put behind bars last weekend.

The police officers conducted stop-and-search operations and traced wanted suspects.

Among the suspects arrested, five were nabbed in Zonkizizwe for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The Zonkizizwe police spotted two suspicious-looking vehicles last Friday at 10pm.

The vehicles were being driven at high speed with their headlights off.

The officers immediately followed the vehicles.

“One of the vehicles, a red VW Golf GTI, with five occupants was followed to an open area in Zonkizizwe notorious for hijackings,” said Sgt Refus Tema, communications officer for the Ekurhuleni District SAPS.

“The police ordered the occupants to get out of the vehicle and searched them.

“When they searched the vehicle, a firearm (a Norinco with the serial number filed off) and live ammunition, as well as two cellphones were found.

“The suspects, aged between 19 and 34, failed to give a satisfactory account of the firearm and they accused each other.”
