Police arrest 78 suspects over the weekend

All the arrested suspects are expected to appear soon in various courts in the district.

As the fight against crime intensifies, police in Ekurhuleni district left no stone unturned as about 78 suspects were arrested during a stop-and-search operation conducted on the weekend of November 22 to 23.

Among these suspects, five were arrested in Zonkizizwe policing area for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Communications officer at Zonkizizwe SAPS Sgt Rufus Tema said on Friday, November 22 at about 10pm, Zonkizizwe police spotted two vehicles driving at high speed with headlights off. The police became suspicious and immediately followed the vehicles.

“The police followed both vehicles until one of the vehicles, a red VW GTI, was found with five occupants in the open area notorious for hijackings. The police ordered the occupants to step outside the vehicle and searched them. Upon searching the vehicle, a Norinco firearm with a serial number filed off, live ammunition as well as two cellphones were found.

“The suspects, aged 19 and 34 years of age, failed to give a satisfactory account of the firearm as they ended up pointing each other. The then police arrested them for possession of an unlicensed firearm. Another charge of possession of the suspected stolen property (cellphones) will be added to one of the suspects,” said Tema.

The vehicle was also confiscated as it was used during the crime.

Meanwhile, the rest of the other suspects were arrested for crimes such as assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, assault, common assault relating to domestic violence, child negligence, attempted murder, kidnapping, possession of stolen property, house break-ins, possession of suspected stolen property, shoplifting, business robbery and drunk driving.
