When is Meyiwa family going to get justice?

We repeated this call recently after the death of Senzo’s father, Sam Meyiwa, of an apparent heart-related condition.

National tabloid headlines even went on to attribute his demise to a “broken heart” following his numerous attempts over five years to reason with the police and get them to take action and arrest the person he knew killed Senzo on October 26, 2014, in Mazamo Acres, Vosloorus.

But, alas, his grieving pleas seemed to fall on deaf ears. Or perhaps he was simply, deliberately ignored as his cries and anguish were muted by the selfish desires of those who wished to benefit financially from his grief.

In fact, at some point, the desire to fill even deeper pockets and ignore the case seemed to have been so strong that some investigators openly threatened to arrest Sam and accused him of “interfering in their investigations”.

There is no doubt that Sam knew a lot more about how his son’s murder at Kelly Khumalo’s home.

He also knew the hushed-up arrest three days later of a local Rastafarian car washer in the neighborhood, Zamokuhle Mbatha, who was paraded as a suspect and later released, was nothing but a feeble attempt to dupe the family and the public, while the investigators who knew the truth deliberately withheld it from the public and refused to make an arrest.

When Sam finally approached former Police Minister Fikile Mbalula and pleaded with him to help the family find closure by arresting the suspected killer and bring the case to court, he was visibly shattered by the minister’s obvious but subtle rebuff.

Despite affirmed promises of an imminent arrest of Senzo’s killer/s, the minister failed the Meyiwa family by keeping their hopes unfulfilled.

Despite all the evidence, the grieving Sam may or may not have shared with the minister during their several close encounters about this matter, one is left with no doubt that he had hoped he had given him enough ammunition to dismantle the fortress of deceit and half-truths built around his son’s death, which he probably thought the minister would grasp and assign his subordinates to investigate and initiate an arrest of the killer.

I strongly believe the police already have a credible and worthy witness in Senzo’s childhood friend who was present on the night he was killed.

In fact, there is no better witness in this case than a close childhood friend who grew up with the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain in the Durban township of Umlazi and whom he had earlier that day picked up from OR Tambo Airport before the two proceeded to Kelly’s house.

Will the Senzo Meyiwa murder case ever be solved?

Here was a young man who was Senzo’s homeboy who had come to visit his superstar soccer buddy and spend some time with him at his equally famous singer, actress girlfriend’s home. By the way, Senzo and Kelly were not just a superficial celebrity item, dating to “show-off”.

Although Senzo was a married man, he also had a daughter with Kelly whom they both adored and they were said to be madly in love.

Meanwhile, the misinformed media, fed by the police, managed to continue to give the uninformed public the fake robbery story of a dread-locked Rastafarian and his two accomplices storming the Khumalo home and holding everyone inside at gunpoint.

Then the Rastaman decided to pull the trigger and fire a single shot that killed Senzo and then the trio fled into the dark – never to be seen again.

For some reason, it sounds like Senzo’s visiting childhood friend who was among the guests at the house might have a rather fascinating story to tell, given details of his observations of what really transpired that night.

Although Zamokuhle, the man who was initially arrested and later released by the police for the murder of Senzo, vehemently denied claims that he is the hooded dread-locked Rastafarian seen running out of Kelly’s house with a gun on the night Senzo was killed, the events leading to his tragic death will continue to make intriguing speculative reading for fertile minds until the guilty person or people appear in a court of law.
