Learners receive awards

Dukathole LSEN School, based in Katlehong, held a special award ceremony at the school for their outstanding learners on October 24.

The school offers a special curriculum that accommodates learners with special needs in the township and surrounding communities. It also accommodates learners with severe intellectual disability and those with an autistic spectrum disorder.

Speaking at the ceremony, Elizabeth Mokholela, the school principal, said the purpose of the day was to recognise the learners’ outstanding performances.

“There is no way we could have not made this day possible because it is when we recognise our learners’ abilities,” said Mokholela.

She said these learners are very intellectual as they were able to compete in public speaking with learners from other schools.

She congratulated learners who made the school proud.

Learners were given awards based on their performances in the following categories:

Public speaking, drama, creativity in using instruments, 100 per cent school attendance, good behaviour, cleanliness, life skills, English, maths and natural sciences for Grade Four and Five.

Mokholela thanked school teachers for their effort in making learners achieve what they achieved on the day and asked parents to trust teachers as their children were in good hands.

“I would also like to plead with community members to treat these learners as special human beings and with dignity,” said Mokholela.

Vivian Makhabane, school deputy principal, said she was excited and proud of the success of the day.

“The reason we are hosting such ceremonies is that we want to encourage other learners to follow suit. Those who did not succeed in the above-mentioned categories will be encouraged to do better the following year,” said Makhabane.

She said she appreciated the support shown by the teachers prior to the event.
