Score Line scores big

Kasie FM sports presenter Daniel ‘Zero’ Sihlangu and his co-host Teko Sello from the Saturday morning show Score Line won the Sport Programme of the Year Award by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation at the Sandton Convention Centre on September 29.

Sello is also the producer of the show, which airs between 6am and 9am every Saturday morning. Sihlangu said it was their second time being nominated for this award.

“Last year we were nominated in the same category but lost to Soweto TV. We came back again this year knowing exactly what cost us the award the previous year and corrected all the mistakes.

“We decided to stick more to local content and promote what is happening locally before we think about what is happening nationally. We also started to announce unheard-of township sports stories, including local netball, one pali, karate, five-a-side soccer, street soccer and other local sporting codes, something other stations do not offer to their viewers,” Sihlangu told Kathorus MAIL during our interview at Kasie FM’s studios recently.

He said they were up against SABC 2, Kaya FM and Pheli FM.

“We won the award because of this improvement we made to spice up our show.”

Sello said people enjoy their show.

“There is a part of our show that has received a positive response from our viewers, where we invite legends of different sports, such as Dingaan Thobela, former world champion in boxing; Jabu Pule; Steve Lekoelea, both former footballers as well as Penny Heyns, who used to hold a world record during her time as a swimmer,” Sello said.

He added that they have a very good working relationship with the local sports council.

Sello thanked everyone who voted for them.

“I know there are people who do not call in during the show, but when it comes to voting, they cast as many votes as they can. I would like to thank those people. This award is for them and we are only going to keep it for them,” added the producer.

Sihlangu described the moment of receiving the award.

“The Sandton Convention Centre was fully packed. As the presenters announced the name of our show, we were so happy, especially because we were nominated alongside the giant’s stations like SABC 2 and Kaya FM. We knew there was Pheli FM. We didn’t know much about them, but we did not undermine them. We gave them similar respect like the other giant stations. As our show’s name was announced as winners, we jumped onto the stage with excitement. It is a moment I will never forget,” Sihlangu recalls.
