Makhoba does well in cross-country challenge

Teachers and non-teaching staff at Tshabalala Primary School in Katlehong are proud of Siphiwe Makhoba (13).

He flew the school’s flag high when he represented Gauteng in the cross-country national schools’ championships at White River in Mpumalanga on September 21.

Makhoba’s journey started on August 3, where he represented the school at the district level and won with flying colours. His journey did not end there as he was again chosen to represent the district at the provincial level on September 3.

Because of his talent, the Grade Seven learner was given another, bigger platform to represent the province at the national level of the competition.

Each province was represented by six athletes per age group and gender, six boys and six girls, under each age category.

Makhoba represented Gauteng in the 4km race. The Gauteng team dominated the race and took the first position. Makhoba was the best runner in the province, taking position one.

Refiloe Tsaagane, the sports organiser at Tshabalala Primary School, said they were very proud of their golden boy.

“From the management of the school to the teaching staff, as well as the non-teaching staff, we would like to encourage Makhoba to keep up the good work and continue to fly the school flag high. He made us proud and we would like to thank his parents for lending their son to us,” said Tsaagane.

Makhoba said he was very excited to get support from his teachers as well as his parents. He said the competition was very tough but thanks to the support from everyone he had all the reason to keep going.

“I was not doing it only for myself but for everyone who has shown support since the start of the competition. If I was only doing it for myself, nothing was going to push me to work hard and achieve everything I had achieved in this competition,” Makhoba told Kathorus MAIL.
