Career expo held in Leondale

The non-profit organisation 80-D Albert Street Foundation held a career expo for Grade Nine learners from Leondale Secondary School at the Leondale Community Hall on October 11.

Grade Nine learners attended in their numbers to learn more about careers of their choice.

Unemployed youth from the community also attended to learn more about the choices they have in life.

Sphiwe Mngomezulu, the founder of the organisation, said: “Since I started this organisation in 2014 I noticed that some of the learners complete Grade 12 but do not progress from there because they lack the knowledge that could be very useful to them when it comes to choosing careers.

“So I felt I could come up with something very useful to them so that they will know that choosing a career starts earlier than Grade 10 and not later than that. We want to teach that at Grade 10 they must choose subjects that are related to the careers of their choice.”

Mngomezulu said they also want unemployed youth from the community to know more about employment opportunities.

Institutions such as Rosebank College, Richfield College and I-College were present to give advice about the courses they offer, while NYDA, Lulaway Job Agency, Department of Labour, ATP Airline and Harambe Youth Employment Accelerator came to explain to the unemployed youth what they offer.

Akhona Nonkeuse (14) said she was very excited about attending the expo.

“I have achieved everything that I am here for. Especially because I want to be a lawyer, the presenters are giving exactly what I wanted to hear,” said Nonkeuse.

At the end of the event, the learners were given an opportunity to ask more questions about their favourite institutions, such as accreditation and funding.
