Ward councillor calls meeting with the locals

Ward 47 councillor in Vosloorus, Thandi Nkosi invited the ward to a public meeting at Vosloorus Civic Centre on September 22.

According to Nkosi, the purpose of the meeting was to give feedback on service delivery to the community.

During the meeting, the community ended up discussing the issue relating to foreign nationals, stating some of the reasons they do not want illegal foreign nationals in the country.

One of the community members, who did not want to be named, said the reason they do not want spaza shops run by foreign nationals in the township any more is that most of them do not have permission to be in the country.

“They are here illegally and they do not pay tax. This does not help our economy grow. Instead, it destroys our economy, especially with the fake and expired products they are selling.

“Secondly, they do not care about hygiene. These people sleep and bath at the same place they sell products we are buying and consuming,” said the community member.

Nkosi took into consideration all the complaints raised by people from her community and pleaded with them to be patient with foreign nationals.

“The fact that their shops are closed for now will give us more time to discuss your complaints. And the police will lead us on how to handle this matter,” said Nkosi.

The anonymous community member also went on to complain about particular spaza shops that were already reopened and functioning.

“We do not have problems with foreign nationals, we only want them to do things the right way and not exploit us,” said the member.

Vosloorus SAPS commander Brig Themba Denge, who also attended the meeting, said they will have meetings with councilors from different wards around Vosloorus to discuss the issue of foreign nationals.

Denge said, “The councillors will have meetings in their wards and will then give feedback at a meeting that will take place every Monday at Vosloorus SAPS Barrack Hall. From there, we will call a meeting with the whole community of Vosloorus, together with foreign nationals, to address a way forward.”
