Gogo raised more than 30 children even though she never had children of her own.

Gogo Phennie Makgotso Mahlebe celebrated her 100 years birthday with family and friends at the DH Williams Hall in Admin, Katlehong, on September 22.

Mahlebe grew up in Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape before moving to Gauteng.

She worked as a nurse at the old Natalspruit Hospital before earning a promotion as a matron. She also worked at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital until her retirement in 1981.

Gogo’s niece, Pinky Sikhosana, said: “Gogo raised us well with love and that is why as a family we decided to throw her a party in celebrating her life as we are also thanking her for all that she did for us. I also wish to reach gogo’s age. I think she did it by being a respectful person, respecting the young and the old. She’s a loving person and also a God-fearing woman.”

Rita Madimo, he daughter-in-law said: “This party is to celebrate gogo’s life and to thank her for all that she has done for the family.”

Motshidisi Xaba who attended the party said: “It would be a blessing for me to reach gogo’s age, but I don’t wish to lose my teeth,” she laughed.
