Grade Sevens learn entrepreneurial skills

As part of the curriculum, Bopang Kgotso Primary School in Vosloorus held a market day at the school on September 11 to promote entrepreneurship skills to Grade Seven learners from the school.

According to Sello Mokoena, head of the department of intermediate and senior phase and one of the event organisers said this is part of the economic and management sciences (EMS) subject.

“It is part of the curriculum aiming at exposing Grade Seven learners to how to market their products and make a profit out of their businesses,” said Mokoena.

On the instructions given to learners prior to the event, Mokoena said he just told learners to go and buy products of their choice that they were going to sell on the day.

“Learners did just that. The purpose was to see if they are able to price their products correctly so that they can be able to get a good profit.

“Learners raised the money themselves and with the help of their parents. They will be given back the money they used to order their stock. And the profit will be used for their farewell party that is going to take place later this year,” Mokoena said.

Nomaswasi Khumalo (13), one of the Grade Seven learners who ran a stall on the day, said she is excited that the school came up with such a good initiative that is going to benefit them.

“We are excited and scared at the same time because we might not make a good profit. But because we received support from teachers and learners from all the grades means a lot to us,” said Khumalo.

She said the market day has taught them a lot about what they are going to implement in EMS.

According to Memory Mofokeng, deputy principal, the event was a success.

“We are going to do the same for the next three years. In that period of time, we are going to observe if it is really making a profit. If it does, we are going to make this a school event not only for the Grade Sevens,” said Mofokeng.

She thanked organisers Mamki Koahela, Nkele Masithela, Sello Mokoena and Refiloe Mpungwa for a job well done.
