Kathorus MAIL caught up with a few community members who were doing their grocery shopping at various shopping centres in Vosloorus on September 1. This is what they said about how the state of the economy has affected them over five years.

According to Thulani Thabethe, who does his shopping at the Naledi Mall in Vosloorus, five years ago he used to pay R11 for a loaf of bread. But this year he is paying R15 for the same item.

This means the price of bread has increased by almost 40 per cent while his salary has increased by just 20 per cent.

“This means in the next five years I won’t be able to pay for a loaf of bread every day to feed me and my family of five.”

As Sceluxolo Mthethwa from Extension 25 in Vosloorus was did her shopping at Chris Hani Mall. She was carrying a couple of plastic bags filled with groceries.

When asked how much she spent on it, she said: “I paid around R1 200, but five years ago I used to pay R400 for the same amount of groceries for my family. Food prices have increased in the past five years by 80 per cent, while our salaries have not. Sadly, these groceries will last less than two weeks.”

Mike Nyabanga who shops at Lesedi Mall said the state of the economy is bad, and if our government does not do anything to solve the situation South Africa will become like other starving countries in Africa.

“Food is very expensive, while our salaries remain very low. Five years ago I used to pay only R675 for these groceries, but today I paid R1 350 for the same items. Because I live with only a few people, these groceries can last me the whole month. But I still have to send money home to buy groceries for my mom and my siblings.”
