Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Thusong centres and Department of Basic Education teacher centres will be available for prospective students to apply online across the country.

According to Mamabolo, standard operating hours apply in all the application centres, including NSFAS walk-in centres.

Applications for 2020 funding will close on November 30 at midnight.

To qualify for NSFAS, you need to be a South African citizen, a Sassa grant recipient, come from a family where a combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum, be a a person with a disability with your combined household income not being more than R600 000 per annum and a student who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Mamabolo said: “To apply you have to create a myNSFAS account online, then proceed to the application tab where you will fill in your personal details.

“The myNSFAS online portal has undergone major technical enhancements and updates to make the application simpler and more user-friendly.

“When/after creating the myNSFAS account, the applicant’s ID number will be validated with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) before proceeding with the actual application, provided that the applicant’s details are updated with DHA and the Department of Basic Education.

“The application form will then be pre-populated with personal details once the applicant has granted NSFAS permission to verify the details.”

Mamabolo said NSFAS has invested considerable effort in creating a simplified and seamless application process to accommodate all applicants, including Sassa beneficiaries and people with disabilities, which can now be identified upfront when accessing the database of the Department of Social Development.
