Church youth donates stationery to local school

The Wesley Youth Guild, an affiliate of the The Methodist Church of Southern Africa Highveld and Swaziland, resolved at the synodical conference in Vosloorus to donate stationery, school bags and maths sets, to Grade Seven learners of Rebontseng Primary School in Vosloorus on August 30.

In addition, the learners also received from the youth group pens and exam pads.

Speaking on behalf of the circuit youth guild, general secretary Mpho Mahalika said the donation was their gift to the learners as this would be their last year at primary school.

“Our main focus as the church’s youth guild is education. We made the donation because we thought there was a need for it, especially to support maths literacy by donating maths sets which we know are essential to learners who do mathematics. We also want to be in fellowship with them, to motivate and encourage them to do well at school,” Mahalika said.

The initiative by the church youth wing started last year at the Vosloorus Old Age Home. The youth guild spent time interacting with the elderly.

“This year we felt the need to extend the initiative by helping to meet the needs of school learners. We noticed that some of the learners used plastic bags to carry their books. That is the reason why we donated school bags to address and improve the situation,” said Mahalika.

Deputy principal Siyaya Mokgotlane said the school was overwhelmed by the kind gesture shown by the St James Methodist Church youth guild.

“This is going to change the learners’ lives for the better. I am certain that this is going to encourage them to love to come to school since they now have equipment which is going to assist them in one of most difficult subjects, mathematics,” said Mogotlane.

Speaking on behalf of the Grade Seven learners, Simphiwe Mahlangu (13), said they were excited about the donation and accepted it with gratitude.

“This boosted our self esteem. As for the donation, it is well appreciated as not every parent can afford to buy their children maths sets and school bags. This will help since some of us do not have real school bags,” said Mahlangu.
