Community holds prayer session for N3 accident victims

The prayer session started at the accident scene on the N3, where congregants held a short prayer and candlelight ceremony.

The women wing of the Faith-Based Organisations (FBO), in collaboration with EMPD, Vosloorus SAPS, Vosloorus CPF, Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS), the office of the speaker of the City of Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg Vosloorus Taxi Association (JVTA), held a prayer session at the J Dumani Community Hall.

This was to mourn the death of the women who lost their lives during the horror accident on the N3 near the Barry Marais off-ramp in Vosloorus on May 27.

The attendees proceeded to Pelser Bridge, where Brig Themba Denge, Vosloorus SAPS commander, delivered a speech.

Denge said the reason why they ended up praying at Pelser Bridge is that the place is a hijacking hot spot.

He said there are so many incidents of hijacking that were reported to have happened there.

“If I can recall one incident that happened here recently, it is when three women who dressed up and posed as church women hijacked a pastor of a particular church here in the township.

“One man who was busy trying to hijack a car was hit by another car and died on this very spot,” said Denge.

After the prayer at Pelser Bridge, the attendees proceeded to the J Dumani Community Hall, where the purpose and objectives of the event were addressed.

Bishop Sibongile Sangweni said the purpose of hosting this prayer session during Women’s Month is that most of the people who lost their lives during that accident were women.

“We want to remember them as a ward.

“Seven of the women are from Ward 64 under Clr Linam Mkhize and another one from Ward 47 under Clr Thandi Nkosi. We want to plead with God to have mercy on us. We know He is the only one who can stop these accidents,” said Sangweni.

Mkhize thanked everyone who was involved in the planning of the event and singled out the office of the speaker of the City of Ekurhuleni and JVTA for their undying support of the families.

“They were there during the funeral. JVTA gave family members five taxis each and R5 000 for each family member of each of the deceased. Even today they gave us five taxis in support of the ceremony.

“The office of the speaker of the City of Ekurhuleni provided one bus for each of the families. What I liked the most about the family members is that they wrote thank you cards to the ANC-led municipality, JVTA, FBO, their ward councillor and the ANC branch,” said Mkhize.

Family members lit candles to pay respect to their lost relatives.
