Local radio station visits schools to discourage bullying of teachers

The initiative started at Lethukuthula Secondary School in Katlehong on July 25 and spread to three other schools - Vosloorus Comprehensive School, Fumana Secondary School, and Phumula Secondary School.

This was the catchphrase staff members of Kasie FM propagated as they visited different schools to discuss with teachers and Grade 10 learners the problems that lead to learners misbehaving in school.

According to Matsidiso Khiba, Kasie FM public relations officer, the aim of the event was to discourage bullying of teachers by learners or vice versa and to make schools a safe place for both teachers and learners.

She said they are visiting the schools because they want to discuss the problems that lead children to bully their teachers.

“It is not right for learners to bully their teachers,” she emphasised.

But she is aware that there are cases where children are blamed for misbehaving at schools whereas their teachers are at fault.

“Sometimes learners misbehave because of their background and bad upbringing. It is the duty of the teacher to learn and understand their children’s background before they judge them for their behaviour, and stop calling them names,” said Khiba.

A platform was given to both teachers and learners to say what they believe is the cause of bullying. Experts, like Siba Ranaka from Mzansi Magic and Sizwe ‘Kraizie’ Thabethe from Ambitious Music Group, were there to provide solutions.

Ranaka said it is not good to be talking about such topics after 25 years of democracy.

“Learners are abusing the democracy that other people shared blood for. Democracy does not mean children should disrespect their teachers.”

She said the youth of today are very fortunate.

“They have all the resources to make it in life, but they choose the wrong paths.”

She encouraged children to respect their teachers.

“What you choose to be today is what you are going to be in the future.”

Thabethe told learners to put on their full school uniform when coming to school. She also encouraged parents not to allow learners to come to school wearing other clothes.

“If you dress well it makes you feel good. If you feel good it shapes up your behaviour and you end up performing well at school.”

The event was broadcast live on Kasie FM.
