Vosloorus SAPS holds schools competition

Buzeka Hlatshwayo from Rand Water said this year Rand Water wants to go the extra mile in awarding trophies.

Stakeholders from Vosloorus Police Station, including Vosloorus Community Policing Forum (CPF), Youth Crime Prevention Desk, in collaboration with Eskom, Endaweni Lounge, Kamva Elitsha Vosloorus Community Based Service, Lucky’s Wholesale and Vosloorus Cash, hosted a Schools Talk Against Vandalism and Substance Abuse at the J Dumane Community Hall in Vosloorus on July 25.

Six schools from the township – Vosloorus Comprehensive School, Thuto-Lesedi, Erasmus Monareng, Lethulwazi, PT Xulu and Masithwalisane secondary schools – took part in this year’s competition.

There were three categories, namely drama, poetry, and public speaking, that the schools contested for.

Vosloorus CPF treasurer Sam Moretsi said he was very pleased with the performance of the schools.

“Each year the schools give us more than what they gave the previous year,” he said.

He said the purpose of such competitions is to make the community of Vosloorus aware of the dangers of substance abuse.

“Drugs lead to crime. Once you commit a crime, you end up in jail. Once you are sentenced, your fingerprints will be taken and put into our system and it will affect you for the rest of your life if you want to find employment. There is no way an employer will hire a criminal,” Moretsi said.

“In the past financial year, Vosloorus SAPS arrested more than 700 people who were dealing in drugs. But we are not winning the fight against drugs because you, as the community members, are not helping the police by reporting it,” said Moretsi.

He pleaded with the community to report drug-related crimes to Social Crime Prevention Unit members Capt Obed Phala and Sgt Sibongile Mambana.

The winners were selected based on the following criteria:

• The message should cover all aspects that affect the community, whether in society, at school or in the workplace.

• The message catches the audience’s attention.

• Was there any creativity when creating the story?

• Were the speakers’ voices projecting and did they understand their roles?

• Schools shouldn’t exceed 10 speakers and the time given.

The winners of this year’s competition were:

• Competition winners: PT Xulu Secondary

• Competition runners-up: Vosloorus Comprehensive

• Best Performer: Samkelisiwe Ngwenya from PT Xulu Secondary

• Best Public Speaker: Sipho Kubheka from Vosloorus Comprehensive

• Best Poetry: Naledi Pateli from Thuto Lesedi Secondary

“None of the schools will take the trophies with them, but the trophies will be presented to the winners with the names of winners printed on the trophies,” said Hlatshwayo.

The dates on which the winners will be rewarded with trophies is still unknown.
