Nine-year-old travels to Cairo to be soccer escort

Visa Logistics scouts selected Motloung after a wonderful display during the Visa Logistics soccer event held in Fourways on May 11.

It is every young soccer player’s dream to escort their favourite soccer stars onto the field during big soccer tournaments.

Tsepang Motloung’s (9), a Grade Four learner at Thabang Primary School, a dream came true through Visa Logistics when he could escort soccer players during this years’ Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt.

Motloung, who plays for Overflow Football Club as a defender, was given an opportunity to escort players during the semi-final match between Algeria and Nigeria at Cairo International Stadium. The game ended 2-1 in favour of Algeria.

Motloung said he was very happy to be part of the event, especially to hold the hand of one of the best midfielders (Algerian midfielder Ismael Nennacer) on the continent.

“I am very excited that Visa Logistics chose me to be one of the escorts for the players. The most exciting part about the tournament was to get advice from one the best players in the world,” said Motloung.

He said the tournament was very exciting.

“Seeing players playing for their national teams was very exciting. I wish to play for Bafana Bafana one day and be more involved in the tournament.”

His coach, Thato Matebesi, believes Motloung’s discipline can make him go a long way as a soccer player.

“If he can continue with this kind of discipline and dedication and stay away from drugs, we see him playing for one of the big teams in the country and abroad, or Bafana Bafana, one day,” said Matebesi.

His excited mom, Danisile Motloung, who accompanied her child to Egypt from July 12 and returned on July 15 after the game between Algeria and Nigeria, said she is very happy for her child.

“I am happy that my son got this opportunity and hope he has opened doors for his twin brother, Tsepo Motloung. They are both dedicated soccer players,” she said.

Thabo Mofokeng, one of his teachers, described Motloung as a future soccer star and said: “This country’s football will not die as long as we have promising young footballers like Motloung,” said Mofokeng.

He said Motloung is not only good in soccer, he is also good academically.
