Celebrating Mandela Day with orphans

“This is what Mandela would have loved to see - putting a smile on children’s faces on Mandela Day - since he loved children a lot himself,” said Ndlovu.

One Nation and Endaweni Ultra Lounge, in partnership with law enforcement agencies from Vosloorus Police Station – SAPS, CPF and Youth Crime Prevention Desk – celebrated Mandela Day with orphans from Dzulani Children Care Centre in Vosloorus on July 18.

Lex Ndlovu, the founder of One Nation and Endaweni Ultra Lounge, said they wanted to make a difference by making children from the centre happy on Mandela Day.

Kopano Kaohela, the co-founder of One Nation and Endaweni Ultra Lounge, explained their visit to the home was a humbling experience.

“I promise this is not only going to be these children’s home, but it is also going to be our home too. We are going to pay them a visit every now and then and do something for them,” said Kaohela.

Other than donating toys, One Nation and Endaweni Ultra Lounge also donated smartphones to children over the age of 17. Kaohela said these “toys” are for the children to use when doing research for their school projects.

Ndlovu said they ended up spending more than R10 000 on toys, smartphones and buying food and drinks for all children at the centre.

He thanked Vosloorus SAPS for thinking about them if they want to do something good for the community.

Sgt Sibongile Mambana from Vosloorus SAPS said this is just a token of appreciation to Mama Nelly Nelukau, the founder of the centre.

“She has made our job easy for us as the police. Each time we have missing children and the Department of Social Development is closed, we always have Nelukau on our minds. We know she would never let us down. Even if we ask her during the very last minute of the day to help us, she would never say no to us,” said Mambana.

Sikhululo ‘Lulo Café’ Maliwa, DJ from Metro FM, said he was happy to be part of the programme.

“This is a good initiative, but I would have loved to see it happening more often instead of making it a one-day event,” he said.

Puleng Lekgwati from the office of MMC for Community Safety in Ekurhuleni pleaded with children from the centre to respect Nelukau since she has done so much for them.
