Eleven murder suspects nailed at Nguni Hostel

Gauteng Provincial Police arrested 11 suspects and recovered over 160 different rounds of ammunition and six unlicensed firearms at Nguni Hostel in Vosloorus on July 8.

This follows a murder and two attempted murders that occurred in Katlehong on July 7.

It is alleged a gang of armed men fired shots at four men who were standing next to a Toyota Conquest in Emlotheni informal settlement in Katlehong on July 7.

According to Gauteng Provincial Police spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo, one of the victims died on the scene while two taken to hospital in serious condition. The fourth victim managed to dodge bullets and ran away.

He said an EMPD officer who saw the suspects fleeing the scene gave chase and apprehended one of the suspects.

“More police officers responded and the second suspect was spotted. The second suspect started shooting at the police as they were approaching him and police retaliated. He was wounded and taken to hospital under police guard. An unlicensed firearm was recovered,” said Masondo.

The following morning, on July 8, the search for the remaining suspects led the police to Nguni Hostel where the police found nine hostel dwellers in one of the rooms.

“Upon searching the suspects and the room, the police found six unlicensed firearms and over 160 live ammunition for an AK47, shotgun, torus 9mm and revolvers. The suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” Masondo said.

He said an investigation is underway to establish if the arrested suspects can be linked to other serious and violent crimes, including the recent murder at the hostels in Kathorus.

“The firearms will also be sent for ballistic tests to determine if they were used in other crimes.”

The Gauteng Provincial Police commissioner, Lt Gen Elias Mawela, has commended the collaboration of both SAPS and EMPD members for the diligent work.

“I believe these arrests and recovery of firearms will help in resolving lots of cases, particularly the killing of innocent people in hostels around Ekurhuleni,” Mawela said.
