Zonkizizwe SAPS nabs 4 suspects

The Zonkizizwe SAPS arrested four male suspects between the ages of 20 and 36 for different crimes in Zone Three on July 9.

Three suspects were arrested for common robbery while the fourth suspect was arrested for being found in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The collaboration of the community and the police paid off when one of the suspects was arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Zonkizizwe taxi rank at around 11am.

Local communications officer Sgt Rufus Tema said the police received an anonymous tip off that a suspect had been spotted carrying a firearm at the taxi rank.

“On arrival at the taxi rank, and after getting permission from the suspect to search him, the police discovered a 9mm pistol and live ammunition. The suspect failed to produce a license to possess the firearm. He was subsequently arrested,” said Tema.

Tema said the firearm, whose serial number was filed off, will be ballistically tested to determine if it had been used to commit any crime before.

In another incident that led to the arrest of three suspects for common robbery, four friends were walking along the street when the suspects robbed their friend of his money. Tema said immediately after the crime was committed, the victim went to the police station to open a case. The police immediately responded and arrested the suspects.

They are detained at the Zonkizizwe Police Station.

Acting station commander Capt Samson Hlungwane appreciated the efforts of the community to help the police to fight crime.
