Children encouraged to report abuse

Elsburg police talk to children about crime-related issues they may face and where to report them.

The Elsburg SAPS, with the Elsburg CPF, Department of Social Development and the Department of Community Safety visited Lambton Christian School and Laerskool Elsburg, on Wednesday, in light of Child Protection Week.

The learners were taught about what constitutes as abuse and bullying and what to do if they ever find themselves in those situations.

“Children are an important part of our community which is why child protection continues to be an important part of our job as the police,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for Elsburg police.

“It was important for the police to get involved with this initiative, to encourage children to talk to their teachers, parents or the police if they are being bullied or abused.

“By encouraging them to talk, we are creating an open line for honest communication and building trust with them.

“This avoids children holding on to hurtful encounters and ultimately showing signs of odd behaviour.”

To report crime contact the Elsburg SAPS on 071 675 6894 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or Childline South Africa on 0800 055 555.
