Woman burns to death as fire razes shacks in Boksburg

The 46-year-old woman was asleep in her shack when her home and two others caught fire in Joe Slovo informal settlement, Reiger Park.

Police have registered an inquest docket following the death of a woman who was burnt to death by a raging fire that reduced three homes to burnt-out wrecks on May 27.

According to William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), the charred remains of the woman was found inside the shack where she was trapped when the fire broke out.

“Emergency services firefighters were alerted of a multiple-shack fire around 10.38pm. Crews from both Boksburg and Germiston Central fire stations swiftly responded to the scene to render necessary firefighting interventions.

“On arrival, three shacks were gutted by flames and the patient was still trapped in one of the shacks. After the fire was contained and extinguished, the charred body of the woman was found under the burnt corrugated sheets,” said Ntladi.

The woman was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
