Ten motor-vehicle pile-up leaves nine people dead

Nine people were confirmed dead on the scene by paramedics after 10 motor vehicles, including six trucks and four light motor vehicles, crashed and piled-up on the N3 just off the Barry Marais off-ramp in Vosloorus on May 27.

Speaking at the scene, William Ntladi, the district manager and media liaison of Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said a minibus, one light motor vehicle and truck went up in flames.

“One passenger inside a minibus was burnt beyond recognition and was trapped inside the wreckage until Jaws of Life was used to free him. The eight other people died due to cuts sustained due to the crash,” said Ntladi.

He said a couple of other casualties were taken to different hospitals for further treatment.

The cause of the accident is still undetermined.
