Grade 10 and Grade 12 girls from schools across the city learn more about what makes up the Germiston Police Station.

The Germiston SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit held their auspicious Take A Girl Child to Work Day programme on Wednesday.

Zimazile Malinga (Grade 12), Wendy Dube (Grade 12), Panevimbo Mugonhiwa (Grade 10) and Lufuno Nematavhela (Grade 10) from Institute Status Acres Combined School, joined Ompfa Sidzhie (Grade 10) from Germiston High School and Adelia Magaia and Lethokuhle Mashinini (both Grade 10) from Cladelton International College in exploring the various departments which make up the Germiston Police Station.

“We mainly focused on girls for this programme because we want to mentor them and develop their interests within the SAPS.

“We all know that most departments were previously run by men with little to no inclusion of women.

“By running this programme and exposing the young girls to our internal components, such as the Information Management Centre (IMC), Client Services Centre (CSC), human resources, finance, Local Criminal Records Centre and the forensics department, we want them to understand that police officers are educated and well-equipped to carry out their duties and reiterate the importance of higher education,” said Const Reggie Ramokolo.

Lt Col Elite Mabitsela (right) of the Germiston SAPS was more than happy to detail her duties within the detective department, to an inquisitive Adelia Magaia, a Grade 10 learner from Cladelton International College, during the station’s Take a Girl Child to Work Day programme on Wednesday.

All learners left the station with a new understanding of what goes on in the daily running of a police station, as well as certificates of participation for their dedication to the exercise.

“Even if they do not choose a career within the SAPS, I hope this exercise opened their eyes to a list of other interesting careers available out there which they can one day pursue.”
