Update: Dinwiddie train fire attended to by Wadeville Fire Station crews

An investigation into the train fire has launched.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) has given the GCN some more information regarding the train fire which took place in Dinwiddie on Tuesday.

Firefighters from Wadeville Fire Station responded promptly to the train fire incident at Union Station which occurred at 6.34am.

“The crew responded with two fire engines, namely a water tanker and a major industrial pumper,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“Upon arrival, it was found that last carriage combination of the train was on fire.

“The crews immediately started an offensive attack and managed to bring the flames under control.”

Ntladi added that they are unsure as to why the train caught fire but it was alleged that there was an electrical fault.

“Search and rescue were conducted through all the carriages and all the passengers who were in transit were confirmed safe,” said Ntladi.

The train was travelling to Germiston from Vereeniging.

“The actual cause of the fire is still undetermined and is under investigation by Metrorail officials and fire safety officers,” said Ntladi.
