Phomelele needs your help

On May 15, Phomelele Dhladhla (21), a youth from Extension Five in Vosloorus, received a call that might change her life’s outlook for the better. The call was an invitation to attend an international programme backed by the United Nations

Excitedly, Dhladhla applied and was accepted to be a delegate to the third installment of the Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) 2019 programme. But there is a stumbling block. The young woman does not have the funds to pay for her trip to Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Malaysia.

The programme will serve as a platform to groom and empower the youth in a variety of skills including leadership, negotiation, and diplomacy.

Youth leaders from all parts of the world will find time to share perspectives with the theme “Human security agenda in the globalised world” as their main focus.

Young people, aged between 19 and 25, will be given a platform to discuss social issues affecting the world and will be expected to provide their own solutions to the United Nations on how they might make the world a better place for humanity.

Dhladhla, a poet, public speaker, and motivational speaker, told Kathorus Mail she was excited to have received an invitation to attend the event. However, the joy lasted for a short time.

After confirming her attendance, she is now faced with the reality she does not have the funds. If there is no solution to this challenge, she might not undertake the trip. It would be sad because she would miss a lifetime opportunity to be with other young citizens of the world to share perspectives and experiences. The event starts on August 25. It will go on until August 28.

Is there a Good Samaritan? “I wish someone can come forward to fund my trip so that I will be able to attend the event. Attending this event is essential to me as it will open many doors as a growing motivational and public speaker,” said Dhladha.

She is a motivated young woman, having shared a stage with the likes of pastor Joshua Maphonga, among others.

She said she would need a total of R15 000 to fund her trip. The R6 146 for accommodation needs to be paid by the end of May. The R8 914 will be for a return flight ticket.

“I would highly appreciate if someone can pay for the trip as I will be representing my country.”
