It is election day

The Advertiser will be out and about today on elections day as we cover the sixth general elections

The countdown to the 2019 elections has run down to zero.

Today is a public holiday, affording 26.7 million registered voters to cast their ballots for the national and provincial elections. So for those who are voting, may it be a peaceful elections.

There is of course no more time to register to vote. This is after voter registration closed on January 27.

Check your registration status for the 2019 national and provincial elections. You can SMS your ID number to 32810 (R1 per SMS) or call 0800 11 8000.

Take note that voting stations open at 7am until 9pm. There are voting stations across the country. To find out which voting station is near you, visit https://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/ and type in your address, ward number, ID number or geo-coordinates.

If you vote in the province in which you’re registered, you will get both national and provincial ballots. If you vote outside of your province, you will get the national ballot only.

Remember, there are two ballot papers for the National General Election, one is for the national government and one is for the provincial government. Voters can vote for a different political party for each ballot.

This is the sixth general elections, after the first democratic elections were held in South Africa between April 2 and 29, 1994. The elections were the first in which citizens of all races were allowed to take part, and were therefore also the first held with universal adult suffrage. The last South African general election was held on May 7, 2014.

This year, there are 48 political parties contesting the 2019 elections.
