Prayer meeting for peaceful elections

With only 10 days left before the national and provincial elections set to take place on May 8, hundreds of congregants gathered at KwaThema Stadium on April 28 to pray for peaceful, free and fair elections.

The meeting was themed Ekurhuleni Gospel Explosion (EGE).

The City of Ekurhuleni chief whip of council, Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi, said the City decided to partner with organisers of the event as a way of showing their support to the faith-based sector.

“Because we too want to see an election on May 8 that will be peaceful, free and fair,” said Dlabathi.

One of the organisers, Pastor Sphume Mabena, said EGE had grown from strength to strength as it was held back-to-back for the third time this year.

“We remain grateful of the support we have received from our local municipality in joining us in this year’s special prayer meeting. This year we have decided to focus our gathering on praying for the upcoming elections,” Mabena said.

The event included prayer, worship and song calling for God’s intervention in the upcoming elections.

Pastor Gugu Mashego from New Life Christian Centre in KwaThema said it was very important for the church to pray for our country’s leaders and peaceful elections.

Meanwhile, Gauteng ANC deputy chairperson Panyaza Lesufi also thanked the church fraternity for praying for all the political parties.

“We are here as the ANC to plead with the church to pray for us and help us to win the upcoming elections so that we can continue with the good work we are doing in transforming South Africa to be a better country,” said Lesufi.
