Silumo failed to accept his ex-girlfriend’s break-up. As a result, on August 27, Silumo went to Hospital View, Tembisa, where the victim, his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend, stays and forcefully took her to his home in Vosloorus.

“A car with two male passengers, of which one was the suspect, stopped next to the victim. The suspect asked the victim to get in the car. When she refused the suspect violently forced the victim into the car. The suspect then took the victim to his house, where he held her hostage.

“Silumo spent a night with the victim and assaulted her because he suspected the victim was cheating before she broke up with him. He also demanded the victim take him back,” said Mbatha.

The following morning, the victim asked Silumo to get her some pain killers as she was bleeding and in pain. As Silumo went to a nearby shop, the victim escaped and found her way to the neighbours, she asked them to call the police.

Mbatha said the police arrived immediately and cases of kidnapping and assault GBH was opened and assigned to Mbatha.

“I started with my investigation and on September 24 the suspect was arrested where he was hiding. He appeared in the Vosloorus Regional Court where he was found guilty on both counts on March 24. For kidnapping, he was sentenced for six years and another eight years for assault GBH.”

Mbatha said he is happy about the sentencing of the suspect because it is domestic related.

“I hope this will serve as an eye-opener to men who take advantage of vulnerable women. As law enforcers, we have to help these women and at the same time send a clear message that when a woman says no, she means no,” said Mbatha.

Communications officer at the Vosloorus SAPS Capt Piet Rossouw said: “Men must understand that if a woman says she does not love you anymore, you must take it like a man, understand and accept it.”
