Police seeking solution to resolve hostel killings

The cause of the shooting incident at Block F has not yet been established in which victims were allegedly fired at while watching television.

Following the recent shooting incident that claimed three lives and left 11 others seriously wounded at the Nguni Hostel in Vosloorus on March 2, the law enforcement agencies including SAPS, community policing forum (CPF) and Community Safety, held a meeting with hostel izinduna (headmen) on March 13.

CPF treasurer at Vosloorus Police Station Sam Moeretsi said the meeting sought to bring together hostel residents with izindunas to find a solution to the ongoing violence that has rocked the hostel in the recent past.

Some of the residents who commented on condition of anonymity said: “Unknown men entered the room in Block F and started to fire shots.”

When asked if the incident was related to alleged ongoing tribal conflicts, he said he did not know. “I am not sure. But it does not look like it is related to tribal battles since the victims are from different areas in KwaZulu-Natal.

Vosloorus SAPS station commander Brig Themba Denge has pleaded with the hostel residents to provide information, even if this was done confidentially, to help the police to arrest the perpetrators.

“We want hostel residents who might have information on what happened on the day of the shooting to provide information. The only way the police can help to stop this ongoing violence is only if someone helps the police with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators,” said Denge.

Denge would welcome information sent to them confidentially by calling him on 082 461 2870 or contact Col Solomon Phago, head of the detectives, on 082 822 7752.
