Thokoza SAPS launches new campaign for women

The launch of the event under the theme "I Am A Woman" was organised by the Department of Community Safety.

Law enforcement agencies from Thokoza Police Station including Social Crime Prevention, Communication, CPF as well as Sector managers attended the launch of a new campaign, Women as Safety Promoters (WASP), at the Baptist Church in Thokoza on March 13.

Communications officer at Thokoza SAPS Capt Buyisile Mvelase said the purpose of the event was to encourage women to speak about issues that affect them.

“Women are the victims of abuse and it happens almost every day. The topic of abuse is only spoken about during Women’s Day or during the 16 Days of Activism for No Abuse Against Women and Children. It is unfair to women to open a 16-day platform for them to discuss something that happens almost 365 days per year. We want women to be free to talk about the subject any time they feel like it. We want to encourage them to talk about it immediately after it happened,” said Mvelase.

She said WASP will help them to do so.

During the event, women were encouraged to help each other to fight abuse and not to keep quiet about it. They were also told not to protect the perpetrators of abuse even if they are breadwinners at home.

Invited speakers discussed how women should protect themselves in public.

Challenges faced by women at home and in their workplaces were also discussed.
