Free lessons offered to pregnant women

Clinix Botshelong-Empilweni Private Hospital in Vosloorus invited pregnant women from the township and the surrounding areas to a Maternity Open Day on March 1 for free lessons on how to take care of themselves while being pregnant.

Some women were accompanied by their husbands.

Dr Alpha Rasekhala delivered a speech and gave advice on the kinds of food pregnant women should eat, like food high in fibre and calcium. He said two cups of milk or yogurt per day helps a child to develop strong bones.

“Three fruits and two vegetables help your child to have a strong spinal cord as well as a strong immune system.

“Pilchards contain a lot of omega three that helps with brain development,” said Rasekhala.

Women were encouraged to exercise as it helps with blood flow. They were also encouraged to breastfeed their children for at least six months after birth it helps both parents and newborns.

“Your child gets a lot of needed proteins while you lose a lot of wait you gained while being pregnant,” concludes Rasekhala.

Sister Isabella Vilakazi gave advice on the importance of attending antenatal classes.

“We make sure you become well-equipped and well-informed on how to take care of yourself while you are pregnant. We show you videos of natural and caesarean births so you can choose which way to deliver your baby. After these classes, you make your own decisions on how to take care of yourself while pregnant and not listen to people who dictate what you should do or allow people to tell you to perform traditional cleansing ceremonies, like drinking izihlambezo. Those ceremonies are a big risk to the unborn child,” said Vilakazi.

“Giving birth naturally does not make you better than a person who had a caesarean section.”

Vilakazi said they also do scans for pregnant women to see what their unborn babies look like.

“It creates a bond between mom and her unborn baby.”
