Prayer service to curb crime in Vosloorus

Pastors from different churches were invited to the event.

To show how serious the police are in their fight against crime, different law enforcement agencies from Vosloorus Police Station including SAPS, Community Police Forum (CPF), Youth Desk and patrollers, held a Divine Intervention Prayer Service at the Vosloorus Stadium on February 28.

Vosloorus SAPS commander Brig Themba Denge welcomed all and explained the purpose of the event.

“After noticing that the rate of crime is still increasing even after trying all the tricks to fight against it, we decided to come up with a solution. We decided to reserve this day for prayer,” said Denge.

He listed different types of crime that were on the increase. These included common assault, assault to cause grievous bodily harm, theft, housebreaking and hijacking.

CPF treasurer Sam Moretsi said: “After trying everything without any success, we have decided to take this fight to a higher level. We ask God to have mercy on us as a community in Vosloorus. We don’t only want to pray for the [eradication] of crime, we also want to pray for drug addicts since most of the crimes are committed by people who are high on drugs.”

Provincial commissioner representative and police chaplain Lt Col Thabo Borotho believes communities can defeat crime through prayer.

“What we need now is to kneel down and seek for God’s face and pray hard so that He intervenes. Crime is nothing when God’s people come together and call upon his name,” he said.

A community member, Thabile Mjiyakho, said: “Our government has tried everything for this country to progress and be counted among the bests in the world. But corruption and crime are the biggest factors that hinder progress made by our government. I hope God will help after these prayers.”
