Bulldozing criminal hide-out

The Zonkizizwe police officers swapped their firearms for picks and heavy-duty hammers and went to Zone One along the R550 Main Road to demolish an old building used as a hide-out by criminals. The demolition work took place on February 21.

Zonkizizwe SAPS communications officer Sgt Rufus Tema said the station’s commander Lt-Colonel Munaf Ismail led a team of police officials, Community Policing Forum (CPF), Youth Desk, patrollers, local hostel izindunas (headmen) and other members of the community, to the site to demolish the old unused structure.

“This building has been used as a hide-out by criminals. It becomes even more difficult to police this place during the night,” said the station commander.

Ismail added: “In one incident a victim of a truck that was hijacked was tied with a rope and left there until the next morning only to be rescued by field workers the following day.”

As the team continued destroying the hide-out, a Good Samaritan who saw the men in blue demolishing the building and helped speed up the process with his TLB tractor to destroy it in just a few minutes.

Ismail said he was thankful to all people, including the man in the TLB tractor, who helped to bring down the building.
