Don’t fall for the wheelie bin scam urges metro

The metro is warning businesses and service providers to be alert to a scam involving wheelie bins.

The metro is distancing itself from a bogus 260l wheelie bin tender where bins are allegedly being supplied by a service provider operating in Cape Town.

This is a scam.

Unsuspecting and vulnerable service providers are then asked to deposit money before they are told that the bins will be delivered on their behalf to the metro’s communication and brand management department, situated at 47 Van Buuren Road, in Bedfordview.

“The perpetrators of this criminal act allegedly send possible service providers an appointment letter bearing the metro’s logo, together with the fraudulently generated order number purported to come from the municipality,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.

“Despite the metro warning service providers of the scam, the perpetrators succeed in cheating money out of unsuspecting and vulnerable people.”

Due to the high volume of victims recently scammed, the metro is emphasising the fact that service providers must be vigilant.

The metro reiterates that the 260l wheelie bin tender is a scam.

The metro is fully committed to transparency on any information related to business and procurement.

Such information is free and available to the public.

Entrepreneurship is highly encouraged and supported by the metro, but any organisation or individuals who seek to exploit aspirant entrepreneurs will be exposed.

“Service providers are urged to thoroughly scrutinise the tender documents, since the scammers have perfected their acts of scamming people,” said Gadebe.

The fraudulent emails have some elements of similarity to the metro’s emails.

An example of the fraudsters email addresses are as follows: name.surname@ekurhuleni-gov.org.

The difference is as follows:

• Scam: …@Ekurhuleni–gov.org.

• Correct email: …@ekurhuleni.gov.za.

To confirm if quotations or tenders are authentic, contact details are available on the metro’s website at www.ekurhuleni.gov.za or alternatively, bidders may email to Hannes.vSchalkwyk@ekurhuleni.gov.za or Siphokazi.Xokozela@ekurhuleni.gov.za.
