Athletics club gears up for Comrades

The Katlehong Athletics Club (KAC) will host its annual Comrades Marathon training run on Saturday, April 27, from 5am.

This 60km training long-run will include a route to Heidelberg and back, which is similar to the Comrades route.

This year will see the president of KAC, Isaac Mabula, completing his 30th Comrades Marathon. That is equal to Bruce Fordyce’s record before he retired.

Runners in and around Kathorus who will be participating in the Comrades are welcome to join the training assimilation run.

The cost to take part is R100 for transportation and refreshments at water points every 5km and seconding vehicles in between.

This year the club will introduce two different start times. All runners who are hoping to run and finish the Comrades will set out at 5am, while the silver medal and Bill Rowan medal hopefuls will start 30 minutes later.

“When training for the Comrades, runners are expected to do minimum of 100km per week from January to April and taper down in May. This is an opportunity for runners to test their fitness and readiness for the ultimate human race in June,” said KAC chairperson Lehlohonolo Motloung.

He said the training is for ultra-runners, but short-distance runners can join them every Tuesday and Thursday at 5.30pm at Katlehong’s Huntersfield Stadium for speed work and time trial.

“Running and jogging are forms of aerobic exercises which help the body to lose weight and make general improvements to your health.

“Running will help you lose weight, strengthen bones and strengthen the heart and cardiovascular system,” said Motloung.

The Comrades Marathon will take place on Sunday, June 9.
