Thokoza pool team sinks Vosloorus opponents

The Thokoza team took on the Vosloorus side-team in a pool competition at Matlala’s Tavern in Mailula, Vosloorus, on February 10.

Each team was made up of five first-team players and four reserves. Visitors had an upper hand defeating the home side 13-1 and pocketing the R2000 prize money.

Lizza Ngxenge, the chairperson of Kathorus Cue Sport and also one of Thokoza team players, said he was happy with the results.

“It was an obvious score; they challenged us knowing that we were stronger than them, as we are the best team in the whole of Gauteng. I hope they will come back stronger next time as they had some of their best players not available to them,” said Ngxenge.

He said they played for the pride of the township.

“To us, the money is not important. What is important is to grow the sport nationally and not only as a tavern sport,” Ngxenge explains.

Ngxenge said the money will help with travel costs while partaking in the sport around the country.

Andile Sibeko, the Vosloorus team vice-captain, said that the absence of their best players contributed to their downfall. “But we can’t take away the fact that the visitors outplayed us on the day because of their talent.”

“Another thing that contributed to our defeat was the lack of team practice time,” said Sibeko.

Despite the defeat, Sibeko was very excited since one of their objectives were met. “We wanted to support local businesses as the teams bring in supporters when coming to play. We also want to keep the community busy so that they won’t be affected by drugs.”
