Drivers urged to be cautious

Heavy rain may cause rivers, low-lying bridges, open trenches, furrows, culverts and even canals to flood, leading to damage to adjacent and downstream areas, even those that didn't receive rain.

The City`s Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) predicts heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for the rest of the week and weekend and is warning the community to be extra cautious of possible flooding in flood-prone areas.

Drivers and pedestrians must avoid crossing under subway bridges, low-lying bridges and swollen streams where water is above ankle level.

“If you can’t see the road surface because of the floodwater, turn around and use an alternative road.”

It is advisable to listen to the media broadcasts for warnings and obey the instructions of disaster management and traffic officials.

DEMS is on high alert for any emergencies caused by heavy rains. Ensure that you have the emergency call centre contact numbers ready and clearly displayed for everyone to know and use. These numbers should be saved and easy to access on your telephone or cellular phone.

Emergency numbers:

• Direct line: 011 458 0911

• Cellphone: 112

• National emergency number: 10177
