More negligence at Thelle Mogoerane Hospital, claims patients

Two patients claimed negligence on the part of the medical staff at the Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus.

Thandazo Ngcobo (31) told Kathorus MAIL that she was admitted for a cervical incompetence procedure at the hospital from December 19 until December 23.

“While waiting for the operation to be performed, I was kept at the hospital and starved since the day of my admission. I was only attended to four days later on December 22,” said Ngcobo. She said she did not know why it took so long to have the operation done because the procedure ought to have taken less than 30 minutes to complete.

“When I asked the nurses at the ward (ward 18) to ask the doctors the reasons for the delay, they seemed to be not interested in helping me,” Ngcobo said.

She also said another patient, Nontethelelo Khoza, whose bed was next to her’s in the ward, also complained about not receiving adequate treatment for her condition, and that her condition had worsened.

“She was admitted a day before me,” says Ngcobo.

Interviewed by Kathorus MAIL, Khoza said it was important that she be operated on immediately.

“As a result of my waiting, my appendix burst. My urinary system was blocked and I had to use a special bag to urinate,” Khoza said.

She said nurses took a long time to change the bag and as a result of this ended up causing a foul smell.

“The nursing sisters whom I can’t name ended up giving me a name ‘umanuka’ which means foul smell. I was offended by the actions of the hospital staff,” Khoza said.
