Be prepared for more thunderstorms, veld fire and hot weather – says SA Weather Service

South African Weather Service warns of severe thunderstorms and damaging winds predicted in parts of the province from this afternoon.

The South African Weather Service has asked residents to be prepared for more thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and hot and uncomfortable weather.

The service this morning released the following warnings:

  • Severe Thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms with the possibliblity of heavy downpours, localised flooding and hail are expected in parts of Gauteng, with special focus on the Cullinan.

These storms are expected to hit the province in the afternoon and bring with them strong damaging winds.

  • Veld Fire conditions

Veld fires are expected in places in Gauteng due to the hot weather.

  • High discomfort values

Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over Gauteng heading into the weekend and new week.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-30s to high-20s for the next few days.

Residents are urged to take precautions when in the sun and are reminded to keep themselves and their pets hydrated and cool.

Heatstroke and dehydration are a serious risk for both animals and humans during this time.

ER24 offers the following tips:

  • Stay well hydrated by drinking a lot of water.
  • Keep a close eye on babies, the elderly and children. Ensure they stay well hydrated.
  • Remember to ensure pets have a cool place to relax and cool clean water to drink.
  • Try to stay out of direct sunlight.
  • Wear the appropriate clothing and ensure you use sunscreen.
  • Limit participation in outdoor activities. If you plan on participating in outdoor activities, ensure you rest and keep hydrated.
  • If you are going to spend time in a pool, ensure your safety and that of children around you. Ensure that they are supervised while around and in the pool.
  • Do not leave children and pets in a vehicle even with a window open.

Severe heat stroke or exhaustion signs or symptoms include the following:

  • Severe headache.
  • Weakness or disorientation.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Severe thirst.
 Monitor people who have these symptoms.

Motorists are reminded to take the necessary precautions when travelling in wet weather.

They are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distances and headlights should be kept on at all times to increase visibility.

Residents should also ensure that they shelter their pets.
