A male driver was instantly killed while a female passenger critically injured after the bakkie they were travelling in crashed into a stationary object – a tree – on the N17 freeway eastbound towards the Osborn Road on-ramp in Wadeville, Germiston.
The incident occurred at 6.20pm on Saturday.
William Ntladi, district manager for Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said a rescue team from Wadeville Fire Station swiftly responded to the scene and found the lifeless male driver still trapped in the wreckage.

“His female companion was treated for polytrauma on scene before being transported to Sunshine Hospital for further medical care. The driver was declared dead on scene by paramedics,” said Ntladi.
He said the rescue team had to use specialised rescue equipment to free the deceased from the wreckage before handing the body over to the forensic pathologist for the removal to the appropriate facility.
The actual cause of the crash is still undetermined and is under investigation by City of Ekurhuleni traffic officials.
