Third KAC charity run for school shoes
Thirty-two pairs of school shoes were collected, while more sponsors promised to donate more shoes.
2018 marked the third instalment of Katlehong Athletics Club’s (KAC) 31km Run held to raise funds to buy school shoes for underprivileged learners in January 2019. The run took place on December 31.
This year’s run started at 5am from Captain Findo’s Beer Garden in Ramokonupi opposite Somhlolo Sports Grounds to Mall of the South via Kliprivier Road and back. We also had a 10km and a 20km run on the same route.
“December is the time of the year to reflect on the year that has been. It is the time for families and friends to reconnect, travel and for people to recoup. It is also a time people use to think about future plans, finances, education and health. As KAC, we asked members of the community to spare a thought for those underprivileged and destitute learners returning to school. We collected school shoes on the day and money raised from the run was used to buy more school shoes,” said Hloni Motloung, KAC chairperson.

Runners did their long slow distance (LSD) run to maintain their health and fitness goals going into 2019 while taking learners into consideration during the festive season. Runners brought in their R50 donation for the run to support the good cause. Some of the money was used to supplement runners with water, Coca-Cola, ice, bananas and mobile waterpoints throughout the route.
The 10km and 20km runners wore bright coloured clothing in order to be visible on the road. Novice runners assisted with their schedule. Motloung said targeted schools are those with children who are the breadwinners of their households and those homes who rely on pensions as income.
