Top cop vows to solve Senzo killing

Early last year, four years after Meyiwa was killed, a post on social media linked the son of a popular musician to the soccer star’s murder.

Zamokuhle Mbatha, the Vosloorus young man who was initially accused and arrested by the police for the murder of former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa four years ago, did not look nor sound impressed when Kathorus MAIL visited him at his house in the early hours of January 5 to give him the Minister of Police Bheki Cele’s statement that Meyiwa’s killer or killers would be arrested before Easter.

Still in his pyjamas, looking and sounding sleepy, Mbatha received the news with “a pinch of salt”. He said this is not the first time that a senior police officer has made such a statement.

“Let’s wait and see,” said Mbatha.

Referring to former Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula’s dramatic media statement two years ago, declaring that Meyiwa’s killers would soon be behind bars, Mbatha said, “I’ve heard it all before from Mbalula and now for the second time from Cele.”

Mbatha has been living in fear since he was first fingered as the “dreadlocked” Rastafarian who fired the shots that killed Meyiwa, in what was allegedly described as a botched robbery at the home of the soccer star’s girlfriend singer Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s home in Mzamo Acres in October 2014.

Refusing to pose for a photograph this morning, he said it was still too risky for him to show his face to the public.

“You can take as many photos of me as you like, only once Meyiwa’s killers have been arrested by the police”, he pleaded, indicating that it was just too risky for him to do so at this stage.

The post, which was shared over a period of three weeks, went on to give a detailed account of the people who were at Khumalo’s home on the night Meyiwa was shot. It also supplied the name of the person who pulled the trigger and fired the shots that killed Meyiwa.

In a dramatic turn of events, several national radio stations conducted a series of interviews with the man accused of killing Meyiwa. The man denied knowing or having anything to do with the fatal shooting of the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper on the night of October 2014.

Before Meyiwa’s father died, of what many believe was due to a broken heart and the failure of the police investigating his son’s murder to show results, he made a passionate plea to Mbalula and later to Cele to book and solve his murder.

Today, almost five years after Meyiwawa’s unsolved murder in Vosloorus, the man who claimed he was arrested and tortured by the police for a murder he did not commit told Kathorus MAIL that he will only believe the Minister of Police’s vow once he sees Meyiwa’s killer/s paraded on national television.

Meanwhile, in his media statement in which he vowed that Meyiwa’s killers would be behind bars before Easter or the latest before Christmas, Cele was reported as having said; “I’m putting my head on the block on this. I still maintain that [the] Senzo Meyiwa matter is going to be resolved in the not very distant future … Definitely, it will be before Christmas, even before Easter this matter will have to be resolved.”
