EMPD and MMC urge road users to take care

The MMC for Community Safety in the City of Ekurhuleni, Clr Vivienne Chauke, has urged road users to ensure they obey the rules of the road at all times.

She also pleaded with all road users to be courteous to fellow road users during this holiday period in an effort to reduce the road carnage that normally occurs during the festive season. She made this passionate and earnest plea during the launch of the Safer Festive Season campaign held at the Grey Avenue off-ramp at the Heidelberg turn-off on the N3 on December 11.

Although the objective of the launch was educational, 71 people were arrested for fraudulent documents and possession of dagga during the roadblock which took place between 9am and noon. Over 60 law enforcement officers from EMPD, EMS and Gauteng Traffic Police, together with Gauteng Department of Education officials, distributed pamphlets on road safety, dangers of substance abuse and domestic abuse. They wished motorists a safe and enjoyable holiday period.

With the industrial shut down, the closing of schools and the long road trips to holiday destinations, this period often tends to see high traffic volumes with revellers also prone to high alcohol consumption, leading to vehicle accidents on the road.
