Hostel violence flairs up

The Nguni Hostel in Vosloorus is said to be almost empty after scores of residents fled the compound in what has been described as a tribal faction between inmates from Msinga and Mahlabathini in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

According to a hostel induna, who wanted to remain anonymous, the violent flare-up started a week ago after a man from Mahlabathini was shot and killed by an unknown assailant or assailants at the hostel two weeks ago. Friends and relatives of the slain hostel dweller blamed the man’s death on another faction.

Responding to questions from Kathorus MAIL, Capt Piet Rossouw of the Vosloorus SAPS said although the fighting seems to have subsided after police intervention, he was concerned about the warring factions resuming the onslaught in KZN during the festive season.

“We have had a peace dialogue between local izi-Nduna as well as representatives of the Zulu Monarch King Goodwin Zwelithini in a bid to quell the killings. So far, only one person was killed in the faction fighting, another victim was, in fact, a crime victim and unrelated to the first shooting,” Rossouw explained.

Rossouw confirmed a number of suspects believed to have been linked to the killing have been arrested while others are still on the run.

“The police will continue to monitor the situation even though the violence has subsided,” said Rossouw.
