Learners from Tshabalala Primary School in Katlehong took part in dance competition

Learners from Tshabalala Primary School in Katlehong took part in the Ekurhuleni’s Got Talent Competition that took place in Dawn Park Shopping Centre recently.

Life skills teacher Bertha Mahlatji said the learners took part in the competition because dance is part of their curriculum.

“We believe that one of the main ways they can have fun, enjoy learning and do well in their learning is only if they take part in extramural activities. If you give them time to express themselves in extramural activities then they do well in their learning areas,” said Mahlatji.

She added: “Learners also discover themselves, their abilities, capabilities and talents through dance.”

The competition kicked off on October 10 whereby seven learners participated in modern dance.

They progressed to the quarterfinal which was held on November 10 and did not disappoint as they did well and proceeded to the semi-finals which were held on November 17.

“We as the school are excited because even though the competition was tough, our learners managed to get to the finals held on November 24. Even though we did not win the competition we are proud of our learners,” said Mahlatji.

The school was awarded certificates for their participation.

“Despite our good performance, we had challenges.

“We need enough time to practice for such competitions. There must be a balance between study time and practice time. We also need to have funds to maintain the programme and have attire in place.”

Thato Musi, the learners’ dance instructor, who is the founder of ENZO Dance Club, said: “For these learners to become good dancers I had to let them compete with big sharks in the industry. I would do anything for these young dancers to become professionals and get noticed nationally and even internationally,” said Musi.
